It is vital to PR your gig/event in order to raise public awareness, interest and then to drive ticket sales.  One of the key points is time-scale. Your event is on a fixed date so it’s important there is as much pre-coverage as possible to get people to go.

Start with the long lead press (monthlies etc) who usually work up to 4 months in advance with their issues, before making your way over to the weeklies and dailies. Allow more time for features to be discussed and implemented.

Ensure your press release is no more than one side long, to the point, and is media rich (links, dates, contact details etc). Follow up every press release you sent out and remember to target publications who your potential customers will read.

Don’t forget to also ensure your key messages are plugged (e.g. at the end of the feature or interview).

If you are a new band, a good place to start is your local and regional press in order to drum up support. Invite local journalists down to your gigs so they get a feel of your stuff, then follow up with a promo CD so they can perhaps write a review or feature up. Images are key as they won’t be able to source their own, so make sure you have hi-res jpegs. If you are available for interview, put that down as it could mean more coverage and include your myspace/web link so locals can sign up/add you.
