It is advisable to have your own annual insurance policy to cover your self employment activity. Whilst any show you are working on will (or should) have their own cover as should the band, the promoter, the production company etc it is best not to rely on them unless you have seen and understood the paperwork!

If you are involved with any sort of show/tour cancellation and non-appearance insurance is also vital for artistes, promoters, agents, venue owners, caterers and merchandisers.

There are specialist music industry insurers who can advise on all risks related to the music industry....

FTTS recommends;

Apex Insurance Services

If your self-employed Insurance is not advisable, it's bloody essential as the tour insurance only covers employees and not the self-employed and if by some freak chance it does cover the self-employed then the Tax Man will probably consider that person the be an employee and expect Tax and NI from the employer i.e. the band or their management and they can go back retrospectively and collect tax and NI from years back!

The whole situation with regard to self-employment is now very complex therefore crew and those who use the services of crew r really need to get a full understanding before they get caught up with the Tax man, and that could be very costly!

Stagesafe have produced a guide to self-employment in the live music industry, this is availabe as a free down load at: http://www.stagesafe.co.uk/use...oyment.pdf
