Budgeting for successful touring

Whether you are organising a world stadium tour or a string of gigs round your local pubs you are probably going to have to prepare a budget. Of course there are always some bands who will just go on the road  without any regard to how much it will cost them but if that were you,  you would be down the pub or taking drugs (not that we wish to stereotype!) and not reading this.

A budget is a list of all the projected expenses and income from a particular show or shows. Please use the link, (sample budget) or go to 'tour paperwork' to show a typical tour budget, feel free to use and adapt the template.

If the expenses are greater than the income the result as Mr Micawber put it “result, misery”

Remember to include all the costs in your budget and all the income, if you regularly sell £100.00 worth of t-shirts at every gig include it but remember to include the merchandising fees to the venue too.

Budget realistically don’t be pressurised  into underestimating costs because a manager or record company would like them to be at that figure.
Always try and include a contingency, an amount for things you haven’t thought of, of at least 10%.

Lastly, don’t get too hung up on the budget trying to make it accurate to the nearest £1.00. It is a budget not a set of accounts.
