Drums

You tend to get what you pay for.  There are lots of budget kits around from a couple of hundred upwards, some are not too bad but the area where the manufacturers skimp on is the hardware, ie, the stands, fittings etc... so it is worth spending a bit more to have hardware which will last and not bend or break.  You can get a decent professional kit from about £700-£800 upwards.

Aside from basic quality of the hardware, they are a personal preference and you should choose a kit you like the sound of. Good makes traditionally are DW (Drum Workshop), Yamaha, Ludgwig etc.

Birmingham Drum Centre is a good on-line shop with good prices and nice people to deal with. They also import a brand of drums called 'Peace' which we really like.

When buying a drum kit always budget for good quality symbols – main makes are Zildjan, Paiste and Sabian..

Note nearly all budget symbols are cast and expensive symbols are beaten (hammered out), hence the price difference. As ever make sure you budget for hard cases or protection racket cases.

I always liked Pearl Export, one of the first of the current lot of budget kits but good drums and decent hardware that won't break after 2 gigs. Plenty around second hand too.
