Accomodation is a BIG expense if you are touring. At the lower end of things you will be driving home no matter where it is, you'll be sleeping on friends floors even if you haven't met them yet!
It's always worth trying to get accommodation provided by the promoter as part of your deal although sometimes this can be really dodgy, ie they give you something horrible as they don't really want to have to provide this. If you are having to pay for your own accommodation you can of course use a travel agent to book it, sometimes they will have good rates. However It's also worth asking the venue and local promoter if there is anywhere they recommend, Guest Houses, B&B's etc as they often have deals with them.
if you are booking hotels often its best to just book them yourselves. When booking always ask the hotel what their best rate is and ask them if a travel agent would get a better rate. If so, either ask them if you can have the travel agent rate or go via the travel agent. Its worth noting they often have different rates for different travel agents so use your initiative!
Touring in the UK - Travelodges and similar chains often offer the best value. The good thing about these is you can book the hotels for a whole tour from one website, but watch out, their rates do vary - you might get a load of cheap ones with the odd expensive one thrown it, so make sure you double check what you're booking.
If you are strapped for cash its always worth asking for a room that sleeps more than two people. Always ask if they can throw in breakfast with the bill even if its not normally included. Again use your powers of perusasion here...you'll be back, regular booking, famous one day etc etc.
Obviously accommodation includes Tour Bus details of which are in our Transport Section. If you are on a sleeper bus, that will be your accommodation for most nights but you will probably end up needing the odd Day room to shower etc and these can either be booked in advance or along the way. When booking day rooms always negotiate and remember to ask the hotel to put loads of extra towels in the room and also see if you can get a power line to the bus so the air-con and lights etc still work when the bus is parked up.
NOTE: The single most problematic thing is parking your bus so where possible book ahead and ALWAYS ASK.
Most towns and cities have a rock'n'roll hotel - ie, one that understand the little ways of touring musicians and their entourages. Off the top of our head
